WHY RED RIBBON WEEK??
SEVERAL YEARS AGO ENRIQUE CAMARENA, A DRUG ENFORCEMENT AGENT, WAS KILLED BY DRUG TRAFFICKERS IN MEXICO. IN RESPONSE TO HIS DEATH, ANGERED PARENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY BEGAN WEARING RED RIBBONS AS A SYMBOL OF THEIR COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING A DRUG FREE FUTURE FOR OUR NATION'S YOUTH. IN 1988, NATIONAL FAMILY PARTNERSHIP SPONSORED THE FIRST NATIONAL RED RIBBON CELEBRATION. TODAY, THE RED RIBBON STANDS AS A SYMBOL OF ENRIQUE'S BELIEF THAT ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND THAT TOGETHER WE CAN GIVE THE GREATEST GIFT TO OUR FUTURE; DRUG FREE YOUTH. JOIN NEARLY 80 MILLION AMERICANS IN CELEBRATING RED RIBBON WEEK. WEAR A RED RIBBON TO CELEBRATE HEALTHY, DRUG FREE LIFESTYLES AND TO REMEMBER A PERSON WHO IN LIFE AND IN DEATH MADE A DIFFERENCE IN THE FIGHT FOR DRUG FREE COMMUNITIES.
